U.S. Grants GlobalFoundries $300 Million for Silicon Photonics Research, Takes 1% Equity Stake
GlobalFoundries signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Commerce Department to receive a $300 million CHIPS Act research grant focused on silicon photonics. The department will take a roughly 1% equity stake in the chipmaker in return for the funding.
The project targets optical materials, 3D hybrid bonding, and co-packaged optics for artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to a government announcement, the grant will accelerate domestic CPO research by two to three years, positioning GlobalFoundries as a lead domestic supplier for the emerging compute supply chain.

@aleabitoredditUS Gov to take 1% stake in $GFS, and award them $300m for the US CHIPS ACT. This is actually a strong read through on $SIVE / $LITE, given this CHIPS ACT is specifically aimed at advancing CPO + Silicon Photonics. (For reference, Sivers
@aleabitoreddit@4intheflames I don't own $GFS, but I'm personally it's surprised it's still down on the news US Gov is taking a direct stake in them for advancing CPO. Surprising to say the least, given everyone remembers $INTC as the latest foundry the
@aleabitoredditI kinda expected it for critical minerals since Western needs as much subsidies as possible to compete with China. US Gov taking a stake in $GFS for CPO was not on my calendar. But it does go to show CPO becoming a compute supply chain pri
