U.S. Q2 Economic Growth Slows to 1.5%, Missing Forecasts, as June PCE Index Falls 0.1% Month-Over-Month

businessmacroeconomics 29 posts · 20 accounts

The U.S. economy grew at a slower-than-expected 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter, according to a preliminary Commerce Department report that fell short of the 2.0% to 2.1% forecast. The figure marks a clear deceleration from the 2.1% expansion recorded in the first quarter.

In the same data release covering prices and spending, the Commerce Department reported that the core personal consumption expenditures price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation, rose 3.3% year-over-year and 0.1% month-over-month. The headline price index dropped 0.1% month-over-month for the first decline since 2020, while initial jobless claims fell to 197,000.
