Ceuta Declares Critical Situation After Over 1,500 Migrants Swim to Border and Breach Fence
More than 1,500 migrants from Morocco and Algeria swam to the coast of the Spanish enclave Ceuta and breached the border fence, prompting the territory to declare a critical situation.
Ceuta leader Juan Jesus Vivas said reception centers are overwhelmed, with hundreds sleeping outdoors and facilities for unaccompanied minors operating at 2,400% capacity, as daily arrivals average 300 people. The local government has asked Madrid to declare a nationwide state of emergency and deploy the army, citing fears of a repeat of the 2021 crisis when around 10,000 migrants entered the enclave within days.
