Iran Buys 400 Chinese MANPADS Worth $60 Million to Replenish Air Defenses
Iran is set to receive its first shipment of up to 400 Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 man-portable air defense systems within weeks, following a $60 million to $70 million purchase, according to Reuters. The deal, facilitated through Hong Kong-based Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, will deliver the shoulder-fired missiles to Tehran to rapidly restore its short-range air-cover capabilities.
The acquisition represents one of Iran’s largest known efforts to upgrade its air defenses since the outbreak of its conflict with the United States and Israel exposed vulnerabilities in protecting military installations. To mitigate transport risks, Western intelligence sources indicated Tehran is exploring overland supply routes. Beijing dismissed the reported transaction as groundless, and Pakistan denied any role in the transfers.
