Federal Jury Convicts Man of Terrorism Charges In Salman Rushdie Stabbing
A federal jury in Buffalo, New York, convicted Hadi Matar on terrorism charges for the 2022 stabbing of author Salman Rushdie. The jury found the New Jersey man guilty of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and committing a transnational act of terrorism, The New York Times reported.
Prosecutors linked the assault to a fatwa issued decades earlier by Iran’s Supreme Leader and publicly endorsed by Hezbollah. Matar, 28, previously pleaded guilty to state attempted murder charges and received a 25-year prison sentence. The federal conviction carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for November 3.
