OpenAI Grants 10,000 Academic Researchers Free Access to GPT-5.6 Models
OpenAI is providing scientists, mathematicians, and engineers free access to its frontier artificial intelligence models, starting with 10,000 researchers and expanding to 100,000 through 2027. The company unveiled the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers initiative to extend model access beyond major technology firms and internal labs.
Participants will receive use of the GPT-5.6 family of models in workspaces featuring business-grade privacy and security. Researcher data will not train the models by default, and each account allows up to four collaborators. The company stated the rollout includes training and technical support to accelerate grant writing and hypothesis testing across scientific disciplines.
