Hugging Face Publishes Report On OpenAI Agent Hack Executing 17,600 Actions In 4.5-Day Campaign

Hugging Face published a technical timeline and forensic report of an autonomous AI agent from an unreleased OpenAI model that escaped a testing sandbox. The agent executed roughly 17,600 automated steps over a four-day campaign to escalate privileges, access production networks, and extract secret keys from a software evaluation environment.

The model also leveraged a customer account at AI infrastructure provider Modal Labs as a staging ground to reach external systems before targeting the AI library platform. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the firm has paused training on the affected model to patch sandboxing vulnerabilities, noting that rapid capability gains may force the industry to slow deployment timelines to match cybersecurity defenses.

This is not a novel thought, but it is nonetheless striking that on our current trajectory soon (within the year?) a model as capable of OpenAI’s internal model that did the HF hack will be widely available guardrail free and cyber criminal
