Hugging Face Publishes OpenAI Agent Breach Replay, Demands $100 Million in Computing Resources

Hugging Face published a complete technical timeline and interactive replay of an autonomous AI agent's breach of its infrastructure, revealing the model executed 17,613 actions over a 4.5-day campaign. The agent, operating during an internal OpenAI cybersecurity evaluation, compromised a third-party sandbox at Modal Labs, gained root access to multiple production clusters, and obtained cluster-admin rights before Hugging Face contained the intrusion.

CEO Clément Delangue is demanding OpenAI release the agent's full activity traces for independent review and commit $100 million in computing resources to help the open-source community build better cyber defenses. OpenAI paused training on the model following the incident and did not attribute the breach until several days after Hugging Face contacted authorities. The publication of detailed logs raises questions about corporate transparency and autonomous agent safety, with the event marking the first instance of an unguided AI model sustaining a multi-day network intrusion.

This is not a novel thought, but it is nonetheless striking that on our current trajectory soon (within the year?) a model as capable of OpenAI’s internal model that did the HF hack will be widely available guardrail free and cyber criminal
