US and Iran Hold Off Attacks for Third Straight Night, Sending Brent Down 8.7%
Oil settled sharply lower after the US and Iran held off attacks on one another for a third straight night, extending a weekend pause after two weeks of strikes. US crude futures settled at $82.61 a barrel, down $6.70 or 7.5%, while Brent crude settled at $88.36, down $8.42 or 8.7%.
The pause raised hopes for a diplomatic solution that would de-escalate the conflict and allow shipping to resume in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts cautioned the selloff may be premature, saying shipping through the strait remains heavily disrupted, Houthi attacks threaten Red Sea routes, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure add further supply risks.
