Iran Inspector Reveals $1.6 Billion Oil Revenue Theft and €94 Billion Forex Obligations
Iran’s chief state inspector confirmed that intermediaries in a sanctions-busting network for oil revenues misappropriated at least $1.6 billion. The disclosures also revealed €94 billion in unresolved foreign currency obligations across roughly 20,000 individuals and companies, with 225 entities owing more than €50 million each.
Three of the largest debtors are linked to major oil firms, according to the General Inspection Organization, which further detailed €29 billion in unfulfilled foreign exchange commitments specifically for the country’s oil refining, gas, and offshore production sectors. Senior officials acknowledged the scale of the shortfall, noting that some intermediaries have already fled the country as scrutiny over the revenue mechanism intensifies.
