Nvidia Discusses $250 Billion Financing Backstop for OpenAI Data Center, Shares Slide 5%
Nvidia is discussing a roughly $250 billion financing backstop to help OpenAI lease a 10-gigawatt Ohio data center developed by SoftBank, according to the Wall Street Journal. The arrangement would be part of more than $750 billion in combined AI infrastructure deals, with the chipmaker also in talks to finance up to $350 billion of OpenAI’s chip purchases alongside a separate $500 billion partnership with SK Group.
Nvidia shares fell 5 percent on Monday, marking their worst daily decline since June 5. The drop caused the company to lose its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company to Apple. The financing talks also pushed the cost of insuring Nvidia’s debt against default to a record 80 basis points for five-year maturities, while credit spreads for Alphabet and Meta also hit new highs. Terms have not been finalized and the deals could still change.
