Nvidia Open Weights Letter Surpasses 230 Signers, Leaving Anthropic as Sole Major Holdout
More than 230 technology companies and organizations have signed an open weights letter launched by Nvidia, marking a major expansion of industry backing for publicly accessible artificial intelligence models. The coalition argues that open systems strengthen competition, give customers control, and accelerate foundational research.
Anthropic remains the only major AI laboratory to decline the endorsement. Chief Executive Dario Amodei published a detailed policy statement rejecting claims that open weights inherently hinder safety development, while warning that broadly accessible models could accelerate biological weapon design and aid authoritarian governments. Rather than calling for a ban, the company supports keeping powerful semiconductors out of authoritarian markets, preventing industrial scale model distillation, and implementing mandatory safety testing for all sufficiently capable systems.
