Amazon Raises 2026 Capital Spending To $220 Billion After Cloud Revenue Beats Estimates With 37% Growth
Amazon reported second-quarter net sales of $200.6 billion and earnings per share of $5.75, beating analyst estimates, driven by cloud computing revenue that jumped 37% year-over-year to $42.2 billion. The stronger-than-expected top line and a 43% rise in operating income to $27.5 billion prompted the company to increase its 2026 cash capital expenditure forecast to $220 billion, citing higher memory costs and relentless customer demand.
AWS sales growth marked the cloud unit’s fastest pace in 18 quarters, with the artificial intelligence business exceeding a $25 billion annual revenue run rate and the chip division matching that threshold. While the quarter was boosted by a $53.4 billion non-operating gain from an Anthropic investment, management warned that even with the spending increase, server capacity will fall short of demand through 2027, with existing reservations already locking up infrastructure for 2028.
