Nikkei Finds Off-Balance Sheet Debt At Tech Giants Hits $1.65 Trillion
A Nikkei investigation finds that off-balance sheet debt at Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Oracle reached an estimated $1.65 trillion in the most recent quarter, eclipsing the roughly $1.35 trillion in debt listed on their financial statements.
The five companies liabilities expanded eightfold since 2022 as artificial intelligence investments ballooned, complicating how investors assess corporate risk. Four of the groups are scheduled to report second-quarter earnings starting Wednesday, which could push the figures higher, and the data relies partly on estimates.
