India's Education Minister Resigns After Weeks of Student Protests Over National Exam Paper Leaks
India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned Saturday and submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, concluding weeks of nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party youth movement. The minister's departure follows sustained demonstrations demanding accountability for repeated national entrance exam paper leaks.
Protest organizers outlined two conditions to halt the movement: halting criminal charges against participants and compensating families of students who died by suicide. The resignation marks a direct concession after the government initially refused calls to remove Pradhan, instead pledging harsher penalties for exam fraud and extending an internet shutdown in central New Delhi. Student groups will now determine whether the prime minister's office will accept the resignation or if the movement will continue.
