Houthis Claim Attack on 2 Saudi Tankers as Saudi Arabia Confirms Fire on Encelia
Yemen's Houthis said they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. Saudi Arabia said its Saudi-owned vessel Encelia, previously reported as one of the targeted ships, was hit and caught fire, and that all crew members were safe.
The Houthis said the strike was part of the naval blockade on Saudi Arabia they announced on July 20 and that it forced nearly 10 vessels to turn back. Ship-tracking data cited by Reuters showed at least seven vessels had changed course to avoid the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, though 30 commercial vessels still transited the waterway on July 22, down from 64 in the previous comparable period. Two Chinese tankers carrying 4 million barrels of Saudi oil were also heading toward the strait to leave the Red Sea.
