Hormuz Traffic Falls to 3 Commodity Vessels as Houthi Threats Divert Red Sea Tankers
Disruptions to shipping through two of the Middle East's key chokepoints intensified, with Kpler data showing only three commodity vessels were observed transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, the lowest daily count since early May, while four tankers changed course in the Red Sea on Wednesday after Houthi warnings against ships calling at Saudi ports. Early Wednesday, the Hormuz waterway showed no observable traffic, while some Red Sea vessels turned toward the Suez Canal and others paused or signaled open-water destinations, according to ship-tracking data.
The EU naval force Aspides said merchant vessels linked to Israel, the US or Saudi Arabia face a higher risk of attack and should avoid the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden until the threat level decreases. The Joint Maritime Information Center said sources close to the Houthis reported the group had completed preparations to attack shipping, including deploying missiles and drones, while CMA CGM said it will impose an emergency fuel surcharge from Aug. 1 because renewed hostilities in Hormuz have raised bunker costs. Reuters separately reported that current and former US officials said a Houthi threat to blockade Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea could widen the conflict and strain US forces in the region.
