Japanese and South Korean Stocks Erase $500 Billion in Early Gains as Dollar Hits 40-Year High Against Yen
Japanese and South Korean stock markets erased roughly $500 billion in early session gains as major indices sharply reversed their intraday rallies. The Nikkei 225 fell 2.40% from its day high, wiping out $210 billion, while the KOSPI dropped 5.24% from its peak, erasing $250 billion.
The reversal followed a surge in the dollar-yen exchange rate, which reached a 40-year high before the sell-off began. The sharp pullback wiped out the day’s prior rallies, capping a trading week that saw Japanese stocks add $610 billion over three days and Korean markets rally on 6% gains that previously triggered a buy-side sidecar.
