Matthew Smith, chief investment officer at Chronometer Partners, modeled the U.S. natural gas system for 18 months and forecasts a shortage beginning in late 2028. A 20-page letter detailing his pricing model estimates working gas storage will be exhausted by 2030.

Natural gas sets the electricity price in most of the country, so scarcity will raise power bills for hyperscalers, LNG buyers, and households. The projection challenges the energy abundance assumptions underlying artificial intelligence infrastructure.
