DOJ Withdraws Subpoenas to Three New York Times Reporters in Trump Air Force One Leak Probe

politicsus-judiciary 41 posts · 31 accounts

The Justice Department withdrew grand jury subpoenas to three New York Times reporters Thursday after a federal judge questioned prosecutors regarding inadvertent errors in filing the requests. The subpoenas targeted reporters for grand jury testimony and phone records related to an article on security flaws in a new Air Force One jet donated by Qatar.

Justice Department attorneys criticized the judge in a statement, arguing he blocked the presentation of evidence and threatened sanctions. The judge noted the government may subpoena the reporters again if it follows appropriate procedures, leaving the leak probe ongoing. The subpoenas were issued by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton two weeks ago, prompting the newspaper to denounce the move as an attempt to intimidate sources regarding a story the paper stands by.
