Zelensky Names General Drapatyi as Ukraine Commander-in-Chief, Dismisses Syrsky
President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Colonel General Oleksandr Syrsky as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces and appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi to the post, marking the largest military leadership change since 2024. Zelensky announced the replacement during a General Staff session, stating the reorganization aims to strengthen Ukrainian forces and ensure deep strikes into Russian territory continue under the new command.
The move follows five consecutive days of street protests in central Kyiv demanding military reforms and criticizing the earlier dismissal of defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov will instead take a new position overseeing defense technology and battlefield innovation within the military, according to the announcement.
