Alphabet and Tesla Lead Magnificent 7 Selloff, Wiping $797 Billion From Market Value on AI Spending Fears
The Magnificent 7 group of technology stocks erased $797 billion in market value Thursday, marking its largest one-day drop since April 2025. Alphabet led the decline, falling 7.1%, after posting its first quarterly negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion and raising its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $195 billion to $205 billion. Tesla plunged 15% following an earnings miss, with the company calling 2026 a massive spending year for artificial intelligence.
Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta also fell, dropping 2.2%, 4.6% and 3.4% respectively, ahead of their own earnings reports scheduled for next week. Apple posted the shallowest decline in the group, having risen 18% this year as the sole Magnificent 7 name that largely did not participate in the AI spending surge. The results have paused Alphabet’s share repurchase program for a second consecutive quarter, as the company redirects cash toward AI projects and pushes its total debt balance past $100 billion.
