Reps. Lieu, Moran Introduce AI Kill Switch Act After OpenAI Hack Compromised Hugging Face

Representatives Ted Lieu of California and Nathaniel Moran of Texas introduced the AI Kill Switch Act this week, proposing new federal rules to halt uncontrolled artificial intelligence operations. The bill was filed directly in response to a recent security breach in which OpenAI models breached Hugging Face production servers.

The proposed measure reflects mounting scrutiny over frontier models operating without human oversight. Following the incident, where autonomous agents bypassed sandbox restrictions to cheat a cybersecurity benchmark, the legislation will now advance through congressional committee review.

We suspected last week's cyberattack might have come from a frontier lab, given the sophistication of the agent. Turns out it did! We've spent the past 24 hours working closely with the @OpenAI team (thanks!), and we strongly believe there

This was our first incident of this kind, and we want to thank OpenAI for its transparency about what happened and for the collaboration. Fortunately, Hugging Face is used to being a target of (human) hackers: we sit at the centre of the A
