American Airlines posted record second-quarter revenue of $16.7 billion, a 16.3% increase driven by higher fares that offset nearly half of a $2.2 billion year-over-year jump in jet fuel costs. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.15, beating analyst estimates of $0.03, as fuel expenses surged 83% on an average price of $4.05 per gallon.

The carrier lowered its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to a range between a $0.65 loss and a $0.65 profit, reducing the midpoint to zero from the previously expected $0.61. Third-quarter adjusted earnings guidance was also cut to a $0.70 loss to $0.10 profit range, down from a profit estimate of $0.28, as the airline projects Q3 fuel costs to rise another $1.7 billion with jet fuel priced near $3.75 a gallon.
