Treasury Stops $99 Million in Federal Payments to 4,900 Deceased People on Fraud Verification Expansion

The Treasury Department blocked $99 million in federal payments to more than 4,900 deceased recipients, the agency said Monday. The savings were secured after the Treasury linked its payment systems to the federal “Do Not Pay” database to cross-reference new disbursements against death records.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department targets stopping an additional $350 million in improper payments by year-end. The initiative was coordinated with the vice president’s fraud task force and follows a presidential directive to modernize the federal payment system. The Government Accountability Office previously estimated that improper federal payments could total $500 billion, roughly 1.66 percent of gross domestic product.
