Iran Claims Strikes on Two Tankers in Strait of Hormuz, Lifting Brent Crude to $98 a Barrel
Iran's IRGC says a tanker caught fire and two other vessels turned back after an explosion in the Strait of Hormuz, effectively halting transit through the channel. Visible shipping traffic fell to an implied 1.8 million barrels yesterday, pushing the seven-day average down to 3 million barrels per day with zero visible movement in the Oman lane.
The latest incident adds a second major chokepoint to the Bab al-Mandeb strait, which is already under a navigation ban enforced by Houthi rebels. With no spare production capacity available to offset the loss of 25% of global oil supply, commodity markets reacted immediately and Brent crude climbed to $98 a barrel.
