Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Justice Department Lawsuit Challenging Minnesota Sanctuary Laws
A U.S. district judge dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit challenging Minnesota’s sanctuary immigration laws, ruling that the state policies do not unlawfully interfere with federal enforcement. Judge Eric C. Tostrud determined the measures reflect lawful noncooperation shielded by the constitutional anti-commandeering doctrine.
The court also ruled that the Justice Department lacked Article III standing to challenge a nonbinding advisory opinion from state Attorney General Keith Ellison, noting that local government compliance was voluntary. The judge found that the sanctuary rules do not discriminate against the federal government, meaning they do not violate intergovernmental immunity.
