Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on $20 Billion of Canadian Imports Under 1930 Law
President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports, citing discriminatory treatment of U.S. cars, alcohol, and dairy products, and invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to levy the duties for the first time. The new levies apply to products including wine, dairy, sports equipment, and cement effective Aug. 19, exempting energy resources, potash, and critical minerals.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday the two leaders agreed to intensify trade negotiations, while warning that Canada will take "any measures necessary" if the tariffs take effect and alleging the measures violate the USMCA agreement.
