Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Nearly $20B of Canadian Goods
President Donald Trump imposed an additional 50% tariff on nearly $20B of Canadian imports, including dairy, wine and hockey gear, saying Canada discriminates against U.S. cars, alcohol and dairy. The levies take effect Aug. 19.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the measure violates USMCA and said he and Trump agreed in a Tuesday call to intensify negotiations in the coming weeks. Separately, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the administration would unveil a forced labor trade action soon, and AFP reported officials had prepared tariffs targeting 60 trading partners over alleged failures to act against forced labor.
