FIFA Rules Belgium Appeal Inadmissible, Keeps U.S. Striker Balogun Eligible
Folarin Balogun remained eligible for the United States' round-of-16 World Cup match against Belgium after FIFA's Appeal Committee ruled Belgium's emergency challenge inadmissible. FIFA said the Royal Belgian Football Association was not a party to the proceedings and had no standing to appeal the decision that put the U.S. striker's automatic one-match ban on hold.
The challenge followed FIFA's earlier move to suspend enforcement of Balogun's one-match ban for a year after his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a rare World Cup reversal that came after President Donald Trump asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the case. Belgium said it was astonished, UEFA called the ruling a "red line," and Infantino said FIFA's judicial bodies acted independently and that he told Trump the matter was subject to an ongoing legal process.
