Zhipu AI Pursues Custom Chip Design as GLM Model Usage Surges 27x
Zhipu AI is pursuing a custom artificial intelligence chip as demand for its GLM models strains existing compute infrastructure. The Beijing lab launched the GLM-5.2 model on a platform aggregator that recorded a 27x jump in daily token usage within its first week, according to The Information.
The company has opened early talks with Chinese semiconductor designers but has not selected a manufacturing partner. Currently relying on Huawei processors and restricted U.S. Nvidia hardware, the project will take more than two years to complete. The move follows similar steps by competitors like DeepSeek to integrate software, hardware, and deployment.
