EU Commission Backs Denmark as Trump Presses for Greenland Takeover Bid
The European Commission reaffirmed its backing of Denmark and Greenland after President Donald Trump renewed calls for a U.S. takeover of the Arctic territory. Commission spokesperson Olof Gill stated the bloc stands united behind Denmark and the people of Greenland, stressing that territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Trump did not raise the issue during NATO’s closed-door meetings, despite his repeated public comments at the summit in Ankara. Rasmussen noted the topic was not discussed internally, adding that the president does not dictate decisions across the alliance.
