Erdogan Allocates $24 Billion to Steel Dome Missile Defense Project, Raises Turkey Defense Spending Target to 5% of GDP
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the NATO summit in Ankara that Turkey allocated an additional $24 billion to the Steel Dome project to bolster the alliance’s air and missile defense capabilities.
Erdogan stated that Ankara has taken steps to raise its defense budget to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product before 2030, with current security-related spending already at 1.5 percent. The president confirmed the country will hit the NATO member target of 5 percent of GDP five years before the 2035 deadline, noting that Turkey fields the largest land army in Europe and ranks in the global top 10 for defense production and exports.
