OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Model Family, Beats Coding Benchmark by 2.8 Points on Half Token Use
OpenAI launched the GPT-5.6 family of models, introducing a new ChatGPT Work agent for multi-hour project tasks and a unified desktop application combining ChatGPT and Codex for Windows and macOS. The flagship GPT-5.6 Sol variant set a new benchmark score of 80.0 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index.
Sol beat the next-highest scoring competitor by 2.8 points while using less than half the output tokens, completing tasks in half the time, and costing about one-third less. Coding and work features are available on the desktop app across all subscription plans, including free. The models are rolling out on the API and GitHub Copilot, with full global availability expected within 24 hours.
