Meta Restricts Internal Use of Claude Code and Codex Over Model Distillation Concerns
Meta has instructed engineers to limit their use of Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, citing concerns that outputs from the rival coding assistants could contaminate Meta’s own AI training data. The internal rules, detailed in documents reviewed by The Information, reflect heightened scrutiny within the tech industry around model distillation, the risk that proprietary systems inadvertently absorb capabilities from competitor models.
The tightening of restrictions coincides with Meta’s push to reduce reliance on external AI providers as it develops MetaCode, its internal coding assistant launched earlier this year. Meta, one of the largest customers for Claude Code, requires engineers to design high-quality datasets and programming challenges using their own technical expertise rather than relying on AI-generated concepts for training and testing. The move also aims to preempt potential contractual disputes, as both OpenAI and Anthropic prohibit using their tools’ outputs to train competing models.
