WF6 Prices Surge as Japanese Chemical Giants Halt Production Amid China Tungsten Export Slump

Tungsten hexafluoride (WF6), a critical gas used to manufacture advanced semiconductor chips, faces a severe supply squeeze as major chemical producers in Japan halt manufacturing operations amid a sharp downturn in China’s raw tungsten exports. The disruption threatens to constrain production at leading chip foundries serving the artificial intelligence boom, highlighting a growing bottleneck in the materials supply chain that underpins the global semiconductor industry.

China dominates the raw supply of tungsten, controlling approximately 80% of global mining, refining, and powder processing capacity. However, year-to-date tungsten exports have dropped by roughly 50%, with imports to Japan falling to zero since February after manufacturers depleting five months of stockpiles. Japan hosts key WF6 suppliers that ship the chemical to Samsung, SK Hynix, and TSMC, which account for 80% of their WF6 sourcing from the country. With two major Japanese producers, Kanto Denka and Central Glass, set to cease all WF6 production on July 1, pricing for the gas has surged 151% to 232% depending on the market metric. Because qualifying a new chemical supplier takes 12 to 18 months and expanding manufacturing capacity requires two to three years, chipmakers face immediate challenges replacing the lost tungsten material, which is essential for filling micro-vias and contact plugs in next-generation processors.
