Ukrainian drones strike Lukoil's NORSI refinery, halting crude processing
NORSI (Nizhnegorodnefteorgsintez), Russia's fourth-largest oil refinery and second-largest gasoline producer, suspended crude oil processing on Thursday following a drone strike confirmed by local authorities and industry sources. The attack, which took place overnight in the Nizhny Novgorod region, damaged the plant's AVT-6 distillation unit and killed one person, according to regional governor Gleb Nikitin. Lukoil, which operates the facility, has identified the site as the Kstovo refinery.
The strike marks a direct escalation against Russian energy infrastructure as Ukraine expands its drone campaign targeting fuel production facilities. Satellite imagery and ground footage from the night of July 2 captured the distillation unit ablaze and thick smoke rising across the industrial zone. The hit follows a broader campaign against Russian refineries, with at least 11 oil processing plants struck nationwide in June alone, compounding existing constraints on domestic fuel supply chains.
