South Korea's KOSPI Surges 5%, Adding $160 Billion in Market Cap

businessstocksworldsouth-korea 25 posts · 9 accounts

South Korea's KOSPI equity index rebounded sharply from its two-day low, surging 5% and triggering a buy-side sidecar mechanism at the Korea Exchange. Program trading for KOSPI-listed shares was suspended for five minutes as the initial 3% rally added roughly ₩240 trillion ($160 billion) to market capitalization. The rebound effectively halted a sharp correction that erased approximately ₩1.1 trillion ($700 billion) from the index over the previous two sessions.

The recovery was heavily concentrated in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together account for nearly half of the KOSPI's weighting. Samsung Electronics, a leading manufacturer of AI memory chips and smartphones, rose 6.8% from its intraday trough after falling 24.8% from its all-time high. SK Hynix, the second-largest global supplier of high-bandwidth memory, climbed 4.8% following a 30% decline. The index added another ₩240 trillion in market cap after its initial 3% jump, underscoring that both the recent 21% drawdown and the subsequent rebound have been driven almost entirely by the semiconductor sector rather than broad-based market strength.
