Russia Launches 74 Missiles and 496 Drones in Biggest-Ever Barrage on Kyiv, Killing At Least 17
At least 17 people were killed and nearly 90 wounded in Kyiv overnight in what AFP described as the biggest Russian barrage on the capital so far, while Ukraine's air force counted 74 missiles and 496 drones in the wider attack. Ukrainian authorities later raised the Kyiv death toll to 20 as rescuers searched through collapsed buildings.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main blow was directed at Kyiv, where damage was recorded at more than 20 sites, mostly residential buildings but also an ambulance station, a scientific institute, a hotel and businesses. Ukraine said its air defenses intercepted 48 missiles and 476 drones; strikes were also reported in Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Cherkasy, while DTEK, a Ukrainian power company, reported damage to Kyiv energy infrastructure that left parts of the capital without power.
The assault sent 52,500 people, including 4,500 children, into Kyiv's metro stations, the highest shelter count there in recent years. Rare infrared footage showed a Ukrainian Patriot PAC-3 air-defense interceptor destroying a Russian ballistic missile over the city, while Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said Russia is increasingly using jet-powered drones, which can fly about 500 km/h and force Ukraine to use air-defense missiles that are in limited supply.
