Micron Breaks Ground on $9.3 Billion Expansion of Memory Chip Factory in Japan
Micron broke ground on Saturday on a ¥1.5 trillion ($9.3 billion) expansion of its semiconductor factory in Hiroshima, Japan, marking the official start of construction. The project is designed to ramp up output of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a specialized type of chip that serves as a critical bottleneck for AI data center accelerators. Micron plans to begin shipping the expanded capacity from its Japanese site in the summer of 2028.
The facility expansion will be partially funded by up to ¥500 billion in Japanese government subsidies, which Tokyo has allocated to strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains. The Hiroshima plant represents a key component of Micron’s global capacity ramp-up, aiming to capture market share as demand for AI-optimized memory chips continues to outpace traditional data storage products.
