US Payrolls Rise 57,000 in June, Far Below Forecasts; Jobless Rate Falls to 4.2%

businessmacroeconomics 124 posts · 45 accounts

Hiring slowed sharply last month, with US nonfarm payrolls up 57,000 in June versus forecasts of about 113,000 to 115,000, while April and May gains were revised down by a combined 74,000. The unemployment rate fell to 4.2%, the lowest in a year, though the decline partly reflected labor-force participation dropping to 61.5% from 61.8%.

Private payrolls rose 49,000 and government payrolls 8,000, while average hourly earnings increased 0.3% from May and 3.5% from a year earlier. The three-month average payroll gain slowed to 111,000, leisure and hospitality shed 61,000 jobs, and Treasuries rallied as traders pared expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in the coming months.
