Taiwan Raids Super Micro Computer Offices as Nvidia Chip Smuggling Probe Widens
Taiwanese authorities raided offices belonging to Super Micro Computer Inc. on Monday, sending the company’s stock down more than 9%. The action marks the latest escalation in a widening investigation into whether the server manufacturer helped smuggle Nvidia Corp. chips into China. Investigators expanded their search from a company facility to the residences of six individuals and the operations of three affiliated businesses, including distributor Albatron Technology and data center operator Chief Telecom, according to a person familiar with the matter and local prosecutors.
The Keelung District Prosecutors Office said the raids target an alleged scheme to route Nvidia’s artificial intelligence processors through Super Micro servers. The probe follows a May enforcement action where Taiwanese authorities detained three people and seized approximately 50 servers suspected of bypassing export controls. While Taiwan does not currently criminalize the export of AI chips to China directly, prosecutors can charge suspects under existing trade and false-documentation laws. Taipei is considering legislation to criminalize these exports directly, amid growing pressure from Washington to tighten compliance across its chip supply chain. Super Micro has previously stated it is cooperating with the investigation.
