Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Countries That Levy Digital Services Taxes
The European Commission said it would respond “decisively” if President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose 100% tariffs on goods from any country that levies a digital services tax on American companies. The EU statement marks a sharp diplomatic escalation after Trump posted the tariff warning on Truth Social late on June 26, targeting a growing legislative effort by European lawmakers to tax the profits of major U.S. technology firms.
According to Trump’s post, the tariff would apply immediately to all goods shipped to the United States if a country proceeds with the digital tax. The president stated the levy would supersede existing trade agreements, whether signed or already in force. Digital services taxes are designed to capture revenue from tech giants such as Google, Meta Platforms Inc., Apple Inc., and Amazon.com Inc., which generate billions in sales across Europe but often book profits in lower-tax jurisdictions.
