Pan Canal Expects Revenue to Exceed $5.2 Billion After Strait of Hormuz Closure

Panama Canal expects fiscal 2026 revenue to exceed its $5.2 billion forecast after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz diverted more commercial shipping through the waterway connecting the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Ilya Espino de Marotta, the authority’s incoming chief, told reporters Thursday that revenue for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 will surpass the initial estimate. The shift in trade routes boosted toll collections and auction payments, with one ship paying a $4 million premium in April to jump the front of a queue experiencing significant delays.
