Samsung and SK Hynix Prepare to Announce $648 Billion Chip Investment in South Korea
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are preparing to announce a combined $648 billion investment plan in South Korea, according to local media reports. The group-level strategy, slated for release on June 29, aims to expand semiconductor manufacturing capacity over the next decade to meet surging artificial intelligence demand. Samsung Electronics specifically is reviewing an allocation of 300 trillion won, approximately $200 billion, dedicated to constructing new chip fabrication plants, or fabs, within the country.
The investment strategy is being developed in consultation with South Korean officials, who have urged the chipmakers to accelerate facility cluster projects in southern regions like Honam and Chungcheong. The President’s office has noted that explosive growth in AI infrastructure spending is prompting both companies to fast-track their expansion timelines. The planned capital expenditure aligns with recent revenue surges for South Korea's tech sector and marks a significant escalation in the nation's domestic chipmaking supply chain.
