Oil Tanker Hit by Projectile in Strait of Hormuz, Threat Level Raised to Substantial
British maritime security agency UKMTO said an oil tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified projectile on Saturday, damaging the vessel's bridge. All crew were safe and no pollution was reported, while authorities investigated the latest security incident in the waterway.
Separately, the Joint Maritime Information Center, a regional shipping advisory body, raised the maritime security threat level in the strait to substantial following attacks on merchant vessels. It warned mariners about possible mines, continued naval clearance operations, congestion and radio hailing from naval forces, and said the southern route had been expanded to allow simultaneous inbound and outbound traffic.
Shipping through the chokepoint had begun recovering under temporary corridors coordinated by Oman and the International Maritime Organization, the U.N.'s shipping agency, even as Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned vessels to use routes designated by Tehran. The latest strike follows a cargo vessel hit off Oman earlier this week.
