Venezuela Quake Death Toll Climbs to 929 From 589; UN Says More Than 50,000 Missing
An official update on Friday put the death toll from Wednesday's twin 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes in Venezuela at 929, with 3,360 injured. Earlier Friday, interim President Delcy Rodriguez said the official toll had more than doubled to 589 from 235.
The UN aid chief told AFP that more than 50,000 people were missing as rescuers continued searching collapsed buildings. Rescue teams from across South America have begun arriving; Colombia sent an urban search-and-rescue team with more than 12 tons of humanitarian aid aboard two Colombian Air Force C-130H Hercules aircraft, and U.S. Southern Command leadership arrived in Venezuela to coordinate relief support.
