Mines to Keep Hormuz Traffic Below Half of Prewar Levels for Months, NYK CEO Warns
Takaya Soga, chief executive of Japan's NYK Line, said mines in the Strait of Hormuz mean shipping through the waterway is likely to operate at less than half of prewar levels for months, even if a US-Iran deal holds. The International Maritime Organization estimates Iran laid about 80 mines in the main shipping lanes, leaving only very narrow safer corridors near Iran and Oman, Soga told the Financial Times.
Traffic has been funneled into alternative routes, including a US-coordinated corridor along Oman's coast and another closer to Iran, and ship-tracking posts on Saturday showed another group of vessels being escorted through the Oman lane. Soga said NYK, which operates more than 900 vessels, is still nowhere near pre-closure conditions, while commodities analyst Jeff Currie said only two small lanes were open and flows were little more than a trickle. Currie also said the recent drop in oil prices looked misleading because the market remained tighter than when the war started.
