Iraq Orders Oil Output Cut at West Qurna 2 Oilfield Over Tanker Shortage
The Basra Oil Company ordered operators at Iraq’s West Qurna/2 field to suspend pumping and cut crude output to 50,000 barrels a day, effective midnight on June 23. The directive, confirmed by an internal document shared with Shafaq News, cites a persistent shortage of tanker vessels as the cause for a force majeure condition. No timeline was specified for when operations will resume or when production will return to baseline levels.
The curtailment marks a sharp reversal for southern Iraq’s crude strategy, coming just hours after oil officials announced a plan to raise output across major regional fields to approximately 2.1 million barrels a day, including a jump at the Rumaila asset to around 1.1 million barrels a day. West Qurna/2, located roughly 65 kilometers northwest of Basra, is one of the country's largest producing fields, accounting for nearly 9% of Iraq's total crude output. Under the new instructions, field personnel were directed to halt pumping entirely and store remaining crude in on-site tanks.
