Sentient Foundation Launches $42 Million to Fund Open Source AI Grants and Investments
Sentient Foundation announced the launch of a $42 million funding program aimed at supporting developers, researchers, and startups building artificial intelligence outside closed corporate ecosystems. The initiative splits funding into two distinct tracks: non-equity grants to back foundational research and infrastructure, and investment capital for companies commercializing open-source models. The program is launching with ecosystem partners Alibaba Cloud, Franklin Templeton, Princeton University, and the Indian Institute of Science.
The foundation stated the initiative is designed to accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence and keep critical AI technologies decentralized. To qualify for funding, projects must demonstrate technical quality, ecosystem value, and at least one core component open for public use. Funders described the program as a direct investment in open AI infrastructure rather than traditional academic charity, addressing the growing gap between open-source frameworks and closed corporate stacks.
